A Hiccup in the Network - Big changes on the Horizon!

Many of you are probably wondering what is going on with the Perth Film Network, everything seems to have stopped? Well you would be dead right, everything stopped, literally! I want to extend my sincere apologies to all my clients and to members of the Perth Film Network. This is a temporary setback that is currently being rectified and measures applied for the problem not to arise again...Thank you all for your support and patience.

For the past 6 months I have been experiencing a major computer meltdown. Unable to access my main computer and the information on my main drive properly. It was a slow decay of unrelated events that sparked something that drove me and everyone insane trying to work out. In that time, my work mounted up and past work to be delivered sat buried in my computer, taunting me and driving me to the point of throwing that "Windows" computer, right out a window and straight into the neighbours pool. Yep that moment of satisfaction, that instantly dissolves back into reality....That didn't solve the problem. I should throw myself in the pool! No, don't worry I am not suicidal! But jumping into a freezing cold pool may just kick start my brain.....But I will play it safe and just swear at it instead and well as you can tell I wasn't progressing forward. I was in a frustrating limbo. Finally, however I am close to getting it all sorted and I am back online.

A few friends suggestion to solving my continued computer problem. "Get a Mac!" oh yes....Thank you :P. For me relying on a computer is my own private hell, since once I survived and florished without one...but in todays world, that is just not possible, but I rely and spend time on it way too much.

The main problem I have is that the Perth Film Network is one person, in the fact that one person runs it and does all the work. That would be me! That applies to Wizard Corporation Productions also. Yes, I hire contractors for jobs/teaching, but overall, it's all little ole me! So when something of this magnitude goes wrong, the work piles up in front of and around me like the grand Canyon. It would seem that when you are in a negative space...that negative energy expands rather fast! But it's also a realisation that it is time to expand my resources. At this time I am madly editing and moving through the back log, it is hoped that I will have the bulk of the work out by the middle of next week.

At the worst time possible, I had to go into production for my film "The Manuscript" This due to commitments to sponsors and locations. From day one a hail storm of bad luck hit the film and it became an uphill battle of personal cast and crew disasters, crew withdrawals due to "Drift" and other issues that brought me back to actively being Producer and Director at the same time, which of course is not advisable as both these jobs are full time jobs in their own right, however it's about whatever it takes. It boiled down to if I don't have a cast and crew and a functioning set...then there is nothing to direct. So Producing unfortunately took precedence to Directing, which defeated the whole point of this film for me, there is just no successful balance in this situation. But that was my own personal goal not achieved and there will be other opportunities.

This film represented something positive though, it was a huge wake up call for me and was certainly a learning curve. It embodied my past, my present and my future. Sounds bizarre I know, but very true. This film and the way things were running took me back 5 years, I felt I had gone backwards, I was right back at the beginning, it was the fact that I recognised that which was important. Then there was the present, dealing with the problems as they arose and watching much of the crew pull together to make it work and my future......where I really should be now! Realisation. I was standing still! I should have trusted my abilities more. However, thanks to certain dedicated cast and crew, the most generous people I have ever met and sheer determination, this film will be completed and will be 40 minutes of crazy fun.

It was something a friend said a few days ago that changed a current mind set. This friend made me realise something, even though I knew it, but sometimes you just need someone else to show you or tell you. He had no idea that he had even said or done anything of importance, he was just being him. What he said doesn't really matter, but this guy was, to me, a representation of everything I used to be and made me realise that I am still that person, just a little tired, however it was time to start doing things for me and not just for others or for the sake of believing I should do it and a lot of those things I had set up myself. I will help anyone who is genuine and passionate about what they do, will go out of my way actually....but I will not carry anyone, no piggy backs here.

This event of crazy bad luck has forced the Perth Film Network into restructure, which is very positive. I created the Perth Film Network in early 2009, after a number of years marketing the Perth film community. I set up a 5 year plan which got a little off track the past 12 months. But it's back on track now. The Network has always been about creating opportunities for yourself and working together to empower what could be a fantastic Film Industry here in Perth. Since 2009, the Perth Film scene has grown, but we are nowhere near close to being called an Industry. The aim of the Perth Film Network will always be the same and I will be working for the next 6 months to realise my vision for this Network and you will just have to wait and see what it is all about when we officially launch in 2012. In the meantime the Network will be a little quiet, while I give myself room to breath and create. The facebook pages are still available for you to network and the Networking Functions, which are also metamorphosing into something bigger and better in the remaining two events for the year, will go ahead as scheduled. Hopefully the all new website will be up and running by the beginning of 2012. The next Networking Function is on the 24th of October at the Empyrean Function Centre, Northbridge and will see the intergration of businesses into the networking mix, so I hope to catch up with everyone there.

For all my babbles in this post, that explains maybe a little bit of what has been happening in my crazy world, the true message here is simply to do what is right by you and don't get lost in all the hype or expectations of others. This is your journey. I have never been one to do things by the book or by halves as there are always other and better ways to do things, not just one way. I have always stood by this, I follow my instincts and lately I have not been doing that. Do that people, strive to be who you are, no matter what and look after your health.

Showreels Elite Scenes are back!

On the weekend of the 25 & 26th June, Wizard Corporation Productions relaunched “Showreels Elite Scenes” with director Mark DeFriest, with a very successful shoot for four actors with six scenes in total, after a year break.

It was four years ago that I came up with the crazy idea to present professional showreel scenes with a professional Director. Perth had nothing like that. This amateur filmmaker, still experimenting, walked up to a professional Director named Mark DeFriest and put forward a verbal proposal. He was intrigued, liked my attitude and passion and said…"Let’s give it a go". Did he just say yes? Oh! What do I do now?

What I did was go into speed learning mode and my knowledge of film making and the industry jumped three levels in just a few weeks. Mark certainly tested me during this time and I guess I must have passed as he kept working for me. We ran three showreel sessions over the three years, improving every time but still battling to find a way to provide quality scenes and keeping it to a fee that was affordable for Perth actors. Unfortunately I found that it was not possible to have a professional Director and a quality scene with the prices we were charging and I realised Perth was not quite ready yet, so I put the project on hold.

Now in 2011, it seems Perth maybe catching on…..Film making is expensive. Elite Scenes was not even advertised and we had six actor clients wanting scenes filmed. Unfortunately I could only take four clients as two of those clients wanted two scenes. So the fun started.

It was a successful showreel shoot with Mark DeFriest directing, incorporating the acting coaching talents of Fern Nicholson and Noel O’Neill into the actor’s preparation. This was a way to give the actors a start with meeting their partners and getting an idea of their characters.

I wrote the scripts according to the actor’s type and ability. A mixture of comedy, drama and emotional scenes, one involving a Karma Sutra mug which was fun to write and film.

As producer, the showreels shoot becomes rather challenging to organise. Finding a good crew that Mark would be able to work with is not always easy as he needs to be able to concentrate on directing and he is always on a tight schedule. At the same time my company is dedicated to giving up and coming talent opportunities. So it is up to me to find that balance, which is not always easy particularly when the work of the crew can make or break a shoot and I had Mark’s reputation to consider, my companies and the commitment to give our clients the best quality showreel possible.

The Director of Photography was first on the list and I had pretty much found him, however he had never been a DP before. Brodie Butler is a professional photographer and amateur film maker who is only just starting out in the film area.

When I first met Brodie, which was a while ago now, there was an instant recognition and familiarity. He had without a doubt the same professional attitude and drive I had and he was self taught, highly creative and dedicated, well prepared and learned fast. Snap! All his work was professionally presented with attention to detail and that was enough for me to know he could do this job and I was willing to take a risk.

So I threw this poor young guy into the deep end and gave him his first DP job opposite a professional director and on a proper set. What better way to learn? He didn’t dog paddle either, he was doing freestyle. My instincts paid off and I can say that Brodie Butler is someone to look out for in the coming years. He did a fantastic job and problem solved with style. Of course he still has a lot to learn, but he is well on his way and I would be happy to employ him again.

Sound of course is the other crucial factor. Well captured sound is imperative and I got recommendations and contacted a few soundies, many of whom had not long left TAFE or Uni. I initially look for a professional attitude and the way they communicate, many failed in this first stage of the process being the first impression. On a no budget film, I am lenient, on a paid shoot, not so much. So I managed to get someone I trusted to do a great job and that was Peter McIntosh and he never fails to perform, is professional in his approach and is fun to have on set.

Our assistants were absolutely brilliant. Elliott Vassila had his first ever time on a film set assisting Brodie as Camera assistant and I would never have guessed. Sergio Zanello came on board last minute as 2^nd Camera Assistant on Clapper and Sarah Filippi multi-tasked as Makeup Artist and Production Assistant. What a hard working and intuitive team! I have never been so happy and confident with a crew (non professional). It was a full two day shoot and they didn’t miss a beat.

As producer, I was so confident, I even fell asleep, something I have never done on set before, mind you I have had an intensely insane couple of months and once I had organised everything and my adrenaline stopped pumping, so did I. It would seem certain cheeky crew members recorded this occasion. I was so tired, I didn’t even realise that I was falling asleep on set at one stage. I broke my own OH&S rules on set and was promptly asked to leave by Pete. Safety always comes first.

Of course the success of the showreels really comes down to the actors and whether they can bring the performance to the table on the day. Those who were better prepared than others would have found the process a little less stressful, others may have found themselves on the back foot a little. Overall though, it’s all a learning curve and part of the process. There were four acting clients and six scenes to shoot, three scenes per day and it had to run to schedule. Mark was on the ball as always and I watched the scenes I wrote come to life (when I wasn’t falling asleep). I was impressed with the actors, most of them did come prepared and that obviously showed in their performance. Overall I think all scenes will look great and actors, director and crew should be proud of their achievements.

Now of course I start the wonderful process of editing the scenes. I am looking forward to it, balancing that with my return to directing with a comedy short due to go into production in August and Perth Film Network Functions. It’s going to be a busy second half of the year.

If things go to plan, then we will hopefully shoot another round of showreels in September.

ONLINE PREDATOR - STAYING SAFE "FILM NETWORKING" ONLINE

The Film Industry is full of talented and wonderful people. It is also full of talented, strange, dishonest and creepy people. An unfortunate fact.

For the past few months, I have been hearing stories from female actors and respected directors who have had actors come to them about male amateur directors/producers using facebook to seek out young girls/women to star in their films and constantly trying to chat to them online. The women feel like they are being stalked and don't really know what to do. This is very concerning to me, as I am aware that they could be using such groups as the Perth Film Network to find and contact girls. These Directors/Producers are in PERTH!

So I felt it was time that I write a blog, which is mainly aimed at young women, on how to stay safe and smart with online networking and in general in the Perth Film Scene.

ONLINE PREDATORS

Definition: An online predator is an adult Internet user who exploits vulnerable children/teens or young adults, usually for sexual or other abusive purposes.

Predatory behaviour in the film world is usually recognised by someone who approaches or contacts an individual they don’t know and then continuously communicates with them to develop their trust. They will big note themselves and their achievements and then offer opportunities to either star in their film or model for them, in which they are usually exploited for their talent or sexually and are not paid with the promise that the film with be “Awesome”. They will usually speak sexually in general chat conversations, but not always.

On facebook, there is a pattern emerging. This is an example of how a lot of men are managing to become friends with young girls or women they don’t know and the women feel rather secure accepting.

Simply they build up a friends list of Film Industry/Community people on their personal Facebook page. Then they go searching for the look of a girl they like and add those girls as friends. Unfortunately we have all become a little too trusting and when we see that someone has mutual friends, we instantly trust that person and add them, not realising that most of these mutual friends might not actually know this person and added them for the same reason. These predators know this and rely on it. Not long after being accepted as a friend, they start contacting the women on chat and will continue to do this every opportunity. This is usually a way to build trust with you or to stoke his ego that you and other women chat to him.

Another way is when he private messages you possibly offering you a role in a film. After looking though photos on facebook, he chooses the type of look he wants from the photos and then offers you an opportunity to star in his film and he will make the film sound unique and cool as well as himself. The fact is serious directors/producers will NEVER offer a role without auditioning you or at least meeting you first, if it should be a featured or featured extra role. They want the best actor for the role and that is achieved through an Audition and that audition is NOT held at the directors/producer residence and there is more than one person present and if it is dealing with a female role, usually a women will be present on the panel or in the room. If they are offering you a role without seeing your abilities etc. Then the possibility is that you could be exploited and you should be very wary.

HOW TO STAY SAFE?

Facebook Friends - If a man asks you to be their friend on Facebook and you do not know them (meaning you have not met them and are not at all familiar with their reputation). DO NOT ADD THEM until such time as you clarify who they are and the purpose for adding you. You can ask them directly or ask friends. Do NOT rely on the fact that they have mutual friends.If you do add them and they immediately start chatting to you on chat and continue to and it makes you feel uncomfortable. Ask them to stop or simply remove them as a friend, even block them. THIS WILL NOT HURT YOUR CHANCES OR REPUTATION AS AN ACTOR….DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED.
Private Messaging - If you are approached through private message? DO NOT answer the message AT ALL until such time as you have established who they are and they have a good reputation (ask other female actors). Once you answer the message, even if it is to say "go away" he instantly has access to your profile and if you have your email on there, he has access to it as well as other information. Stay in control.
Audition -If they are offering you a role in a film without going through a standard audition (where other people are also auditioned) then be very wary. Most auditions are advertised. Serious Directors and Producers rarely approach actors they don’t know personally, they go through an agent or advertise a casting call. DON’T BE EXPLOITED.
Never go to a producer or directors house, unless you know them well. Even then, make sure someone knows that you are going there if it is a man or take someone with you. Always meet publicly.

If a director/producer asks you to dress sexy for an audition…DON’T. If they ask you to take your clothes off in an audition “DON’T! Professional shoots will follow certain protocols and you will be advised way in advanced if nudity is necessary and why? Then of course the audition will be set up to make sure you are comfortable and safe. Don’t become a peep show.
Remember just because a guy is good looking and seems charming and nice…doesn’t mean his intentions are honourable. Never let yourself be pushed into something you don’t want to do. Say NO! Don’t let them intimidate you or make you feel guilty. You are the boss in your choices.
Read Script - Make sure you ask to read the script and establish the type of role you will be playing, before you accept or even consider signing any form of release or contract. Understand fully what you are expected to do. Is there a possibility for sexy clothes or even a sex scene of some type? Are you exposing your body more than you are comfortable. Make sure you understand the role you will be playing.
Contracts - DO NOT sign any form of release or contract if you don’t fully understand what you are signing. Do not sign a release or contract if it is asking you to volunteer totally or offered a minimal fee of say $10. Make sure that if you are doing a no to low budget film that the contract states that you will volunteer on the condition that the film is not sold or distributed for profit in any way. If it is, the contract is void. Otherwise the filmmakers could profit from your work and you don’tThe ideal contract would be a full payment, deferred payment or offering you shares in the film. You need to get something for your work "No budget" or otherwise. Have respect for yourself and your talent. The safest way is to have family or a trusted friend look over your contract before you sign it. DO NOT fall for the line “You have to sign it now or you miss out on the role” If they really want you and are genuine, they will wait and do the right thing by you. A contract is an agreement between two parties and it is your right to take it away to read and even ask for changes.
Sex Roles - I recommend strongly that you do not accept a sex scene early in your acting career, particularly on a no budget film where you are not being paid and are being produced and directed by experimental filmmakers making no or low budget films. It may seem cool at the time, women usually regret it later when their careers take off. If you choose to, please stay safe. Make sure the scene is important to the story and not just thrown in there for the sake of a sex scene. Make sure it is done classy and not like a porn scene. Also that there is a women on set at all times and only essential crew. Better still have a friend on set. Professional film sets do everything to make sure you are safe and comfortable, amateur sets are not so organised or even aware of protocol. Please do not let anyone force you into anything you don’t want to do. Also you have no idea what these amateur directors might do with the footage in the future. Please think carefully before accepting these roles. I personally recommend that you DON'T!
Reputation - Always check the work of the filmmaker and their reputation working with cast and crew, by talking to cast and crew he has worked with. Don’t fall for the line that they are the only person who does that style of film or even that they are the original or the best. There are other great filmmakers doing all genres of film from drama, comedy, action to science fiction and fantasy here in Perth. who work within the rules
If you are under 18 and an adult man, you have not met or don’t know well, asks to be your friend, please consult your parents for advice.
Basically be smart, follow your intuition and if it doesn’t feel right, then listen to yourself. Take on roles that will actually showcase your talent and not your body. Please avoid being exploited. If you feel trapped and intimidated by someone or afraid to block someone, even though they are annoying you or you feel threatened, etc. Seek advice. If you don’t have anyone to talk to, I am happy to help where I can.

NOTE: While I have concentrated most of this on women, it also very much applies to men, although it is rarer, but it does happen. So always be vigilant

LA Talent Scout Seminar - How does this benefit Perth Actors?

There is one thing I know for sure. I live in a small town! Yes, Perth. Our growing city, the most isolated city in the world has a small town mentality, which I love in many respects, but when it comes to film and business, it frustrates me no end.

Don't get me wrong, I love Perth. So much so that I don't really want to leave here to forge a career in Film. I want a Film Industry here, I want to make films here and I will work to help make that happen. However for many of you, Your aspirations will outgrow Perth fast and it is a fact that you will actually have to leave here to get work and experience. But you can always come back. This applies to all areas of film but actors particularly. So how to prepare?

One thing that is tremendously positive about Perth is that due to our isolation, we end up having the most trained talent pool in the world. Our talent is, raw and fresh and that is attractive to the USA market, but we are also naïve and inexperienced. To work professionally (get paid) we need to be a little more proactive and disciplined.

We are extremely laid back in our approach to things and our commitments. So how do we break that mentality and start working towards making Perth a thriving Film Industry? How do our actors prepare to make it in the professional world? The fact is simple, looks and talent is just not enough.

It’s the Entertainment Business or Show Business as it is also referred. No matter how you say it, it still means the same thing. It’s a business and that is a fact you will never escape. So everyone needs to approach their craft with that attitude and obtain the necessary knowledge to achieve it.

Learning how the Film Industry works and how to market yourself is imperative to being successful. It’s one of the most competitive industries and you are competing with people who are as good as you. Sometimes they are not as good as you, but they still got the job. Why? Because they know how to market themselves.

Acting is probably the hardest profession to break into and you really do need to have the package. So how do you go about learning how to do that?

My background is marketing and yes, I help actors to set up a plan and learn how to market themselves and that service is available on an hourly rate through the Perth Film Network as well as workshops. However it always helps to hear it from someone who is in the thick of it all in Los Angeles and actually scouts for acting talent. Who better to give you advice on how to set up your plan to succeed as an actor?

Jason saw tremendous possibilities in Perth and wants to come back again to run another seminar and meet more actors before returning to LA. I am still bamboozled that actors are still getting black and white headshots done, last time I checked we humans are not monochrome and film and TV is primarily colour now. So logically, why would you want a black and white photo? It just doesn’t represent you well. I love the look of black and white photos, just not on headshots. Don’t underestimate how important a headshot is and how it should be presented. That goes for your show reel also; it is not just simply throwing a group of scenes together. Do you really understand what casting directors, producers and directors look for?

I can’t stress enough how important learning how to market yourself is as part of your acting education. You need to see yourself as a product because that is exactly what you are.

I am very particular about what workshops, seminars and events I organise. They need to benefit the actor or filmmaker and be taught by someone who is qualified or very experienced in their field and can make a positive and valuable contribution, offering accurate and sound advice. The Perth Film Network aims to provide quality and I am also very particular about who and what I endorse. So if you see “Recommended by the Perth Film Network” on an event, then be sure that you will get your money’s worth and will be taught by qualified instructors.

The Jason Siner seminar is one I 100% recommend to all actors no matter what level you are, even if you are just starting out. It would also benefit Producers, Directors and those looking to be casting directors, agents or even talent scouts. It will give you a valuable insight into how things work. Perth Film Network - For Actors or Filmmakers?

There seems to be some form of confusion as to what the Perth Film Network is and who it is aimed at. Reading posts around the web, it would seem that people are under some sort of impression that the Perth Film Network is primarily for Filmmakers and not for actors. How people have come to this conclusion fascinates me, but actually doesn't surprise me.

Here in Perth, there seems to be this line between actors and everyone else in the Film Industry or should I say filmmaking process. Why this is, has always escaped me. Aren't we are all contributing to and making a film? Are we all not in the same Industry? Filmmakers need actors and actors need filmmakers, it is really that simple...There is no us and them. Then we should consider the suppliers, the caterers, the investors, the designers, the marketers, distributers etc...Yes they are all a part of the filmmaking process and we all work together as a team to make a film happen.

So who is the Perth Film Network aimed at? ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE associated with, or contributing to, the Film Industry. What is it about? NETWORKING! Bringing people together to create opportunities, to educate, encourage professional attitudes and to create a flourishing and supporting film community to strengthen the Perth Film Industry.

If nobody knows you exist in the industry, then you don't exist. Make yourself known in the Perth Film Scene and beyond, become a part of the Indie Film scene, make professional contacts, learn how to market yourself and learn from others. The Perth Film Network have valuable industry professional mentors such as Mark DeFriest, Fern Nicholson and Noel O'Neill that attend functions and run special workshops to help prepare actors and Filmmakers wanting to pursue a career in film professionally. We also offer advice and mentoring. If we don't know, we will recommend someone who does.

Everybody should understand the Industry they are entering into and how it works. Put simply; learn how the industry works, so you can make it work for you.
